ABOUT GOODWILL®

What We Do and Why We Do It

Goodwill® Industries of Monocacy Valley’s mission is to “Create Hope, Jobs and Futures in Our Community.” As a member organization of Goodwill® Industries International, we embrace this mission with commitment and a spirit of inclusiveness.

This mission is reflected throughout our Goodwill(R) organization - from our senior staff to our retail operations personnel; from members of our board of directors to our job coaches. As we plan for 2010 and beyond, we continue to be guided by the values inherent in our mission - "Creating Hope, Jobs and Futures in Our Community."

Revenues from retail operations, business development, donations of vehicles, retail goods and monetary contributions all support this mission and help us in areas of program development, service delivery, quality assurance and client/customer support.

This is WHY YOU and what you do to support US are SO important!

Our History

Goodwill® Industries of Monocacy Valley began as a branch store of the Baltimore Goodwill®’s retail operation. Located at 10 South Benz Street in Frederick, Maryland, we became an autonomous organization in 1969.

When the old Ox Fibre Brush Company sold its building at 400 East Church Street in Frederick for $50,000, the founding leadership of our local Goodwill® began operating its own facility as both a donations processing and retail sales location. In the early 1970s, fire destroyed approximately 100,000 square feet of the building. Because the location of the fire was where the Goodwill® primary operations were located, the organization temporarily moved to the Frederick Post Office for an interim period while cleanup and building modifications were undertaken.

Prior to a 12,000 square-foot renovation completed in January 2002, the second floor of the entire building complex (approximately 40,000 square feet) were deemed uninhabitable and inaccessible to individuals with disabilities. However, this renovation was able to revive one of the four buildings in the Church Street complex, providing Goodwill® with accessible office space, a large conference room facility, computer training space, vocational evaluation offices, day services space, a work skills classroom, administrative offices, a large employee lunchroom and sick room.

Later, two additional retail store operations opened in Brunswick and Thurmont, both of which were subsequently closed. In 1993, we opened a store in Westminster in Carroll County, which burned in 1999 and was then relocated to its present site. A new store in Thurmont opened in 1999 and the second retail location in Frederick on Buckeystown Pike (Route 85) opened in 2000.
