C.A.R.E.S. - Assistance with Clothing/Household Furnishings
Success Story
Andres has been with Goodwill® since January 2007. When he came to Goodwill® he could not speak any English so Goodwill® hired a job coach to work with him who was fluent in Spanish and English. He works in the processing area hanging clothes and helps on the dock at the Route 85 store. He really enjoys working on the dock, because he can meet a lot more people. Andres uses a wheel chair, but he has never let anything get in his way when he is determined to accomplish what he wants to do. He has been taking a computer class with the help of his job coach, and he has successfully completed his first year of classes and is enrolled in his second class. He also volunteers at Frederick Memorial Hospital with a co-worker and the help of his job coach. He cleans the binders of patients who have left the hospital. Andres has been learning to speak English.
Our Community Alliance to Request Emergency Services (C.A.R.E.S.) Program is a communitywide partnership program designed by our Goodwill® to address EMERGENCY needs of people in the Frederick and Carroll County areas. By issuing certificates to eligible individuals and families that allow them to purchase clothing, furniture and other donated goods from any of our six Goodwill® retail stores, our organization helps with the basic needs of clothing and household goods.
Emergency needs may be circumstances such as:
job loss of primary family wage-earner
homelessness
sudden illness in family that creates need
flooding of family residence
Goodwill® staff only issues C.A.R.E.S. certificates to individuals enrolled in a Goodwill® job training program and in need of emergency help. The majority of C.A.R.E.S. certificates are issued by one of Goodwill’s partner agencies.
If you are a nonprofit agency serving people in Frederick or Carroll counties in need of C.A.R.E.S. certificates for your clients, please contact Cindy Freeman, Director of Workforce Development at (301-662-0622) ext. 205 or cfreemen@gimv.org for more information about this program.
