Your donations help people find jobs by funding no-cost career services, powered by Goodwill in Maryland. Together, we are preparing individuals to create a better future for themselves, their families and the community—ultimately fulfilling our mission of ending poverty through the power of work.

Upon request, one of our associates will provide you a receipt confirming our status as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, which makes your donation tax-deductible. For further information on topics such as determining the fair-market value of donated items, please visit the IRS website.

We accept everything from unwanted clothing and household items to car donations and electronics—in fact, we will happily sort and sell just about anything you bring in (aside from unsellable hazardous materials). Because without your generous donations, our organization wouldn’t exist. So once again, thank you!

What to Donate

Below you’ll find our guidelines for donations we can and cannot accept. In advance, please check the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website for product recalls. Items that have been recalled cannot be donated to or sold by Goodwill.

We gratefully accept the donation of the following needed items in good, saleable condition:

  • Appliances
  • Bedding
  • Books & Media
  • Clothing & Accessories
  • Cooking Accessories
  • Drapery
  • Electronics*
  • Furniture

Unacceptable Items

Regrettably, we must decline certain items that would necessitate diverting funds from our community and workforce development programs, which runs contrary to our mission. Donations Goodwill cannot accept include:

  • Automobile parts — Tires, wheels, batteries, seats, body parts and engines.
  • Broken appliances or items that do not work — TVs, microwave ovens, copy machines.
  • Broken, torn, stained or odorous furniture — GIMV cannot repair or clean items and can only offer clean, usable items for sale in stores or online.
  • Building materials — Carpets, shutters, doors, windows, toilets, lumber, concrete, bricks, stones.
  • Frequently recalled items — Infant furniture, car seats, exercise equipment, baby cribs, strollers, carriages, playpens/play yards, children’s items containing lead or phthalates.
  • Hazardous materials — Kerosene, gas, paint or any chemicals.
  • Large home goods — Mattresses, stoves, pianos, refrigerators.
  • Medical equipment — Wheelchairs, potty chairs and crutches, among others.

For further clarification, please contact a retail store manager and he/she will help guide you to other possibilities, such as your local recycling center.
